trickster’s black shirt

Trickster is out walking around near a lake one afternoon when he sees someone standing on the other side of the lake. That person is wearing a black shirt and pointing his arm at him. Pointing at someone in this way is rude behavior and it offends Trickster.

“Stop that, Younger Brother,” Trickster says. But the one pointing at him does not stop. This makes Trickster angry.

“I, too, can play this game,” Trickster says. Then he goes home, puts on a black shirt, and comes back to stand with his own arm pointing at that rude person. Trickster stands that way all through the night. When the sun comes up the next day, the morning light shows Trickster that what he thought was someone pointing at him was actually a one-limbed dead tree blackened by fire.

“It is because I do things like this that the people call me the Foolish One,” Trickster says. “They are right.”
